Calculate the total before splitting
First confirm the bill amount you want to tip on. Some people calculate gratuity on the subtotal before sales tax, while others use the final taxed amount.
The tool multiplies that bill by the entered percentage, adds the tip, and then divides the full amount by the number of people.
- Look for an automatic gratuity or service charge.
- Confirm whether the tip should apply before or after tax.
- Round the final payment in a way the group agrees on.
- Use separate calculations for unequal shares.
Service charges and gratuities
A mandatory service charge is not always the same as a voluntary tip. Restaurant policies and local rules can affect how a charge is described and distributed.
When a receipt already includes a gratuity, enter zero as the additional tip percentage unless the group intends to add more.
Handling unequal orders
Equal splitting is convenient when orders are similar. If one person ordered substantially more or is not sharing alcohol, calculate each person's subtotal first, then allocate shared items, tax, and tip using an agreed method.
The calculator intentionally uses an equal split so the result remains transparent and quick to verify.
The formula used
Per person = [bill + (bill × tip rate)] ÷ number of peopleThe entered tip percentage is applied to the full entered bill. Enter the pre-tax or post-tax amount according to your own tipping preference.
Example: an $85 bill for two
An $85 bill with a 20% tip produces a $17 tip and a $102 final total. Split equally between two people, each person pays $51.
