Identify the workweek first
Federal overtime is generally measured in a fixed 168-hour workweek. Working 45 hours one week and 35 the next does not normally erase the five overtime hours in the first week.
Use the regular rate, not always the stated hourly rate
Certain nondiscretionary payments can affect the regular rate used for overtime. A simple calculator assumes the entered hourly rate is the relevant base, so complex bonus arrangements need payroll review.
Estimate gross overtime before taxes
The overtime premium increases gross wages. Withholding may also rise on the larger check, but that does not mean overtime itself has a special final income-tax rate.
Example: 46 hours at $24
Regular earnings are 40 × $24 = $960. Six overtime hours at $36 add $216, for $1,176 gross weekly pay before taxes and deductions.
