How to Split a Restaurant Bill and Tip

Calculate a tip from the intended base, include tax when desired, and divide a shared bill clearly.

ReviewedAugust 18, 2026
ANSWER IN BRIEF

Choose whether the tip percentage applies to the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax amount, calculate the tip, add it to the bill, and divide by diners. For unequal orders, allocate items and shared charges before splitting the tip.

01

Agree on the tip base

Some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal while others use the final bill. Either can be calculated; state the choice so the group understands the result.

02

Separate equal and unequal splits

An equal split is simple when orders are similar. Otherwise assign individual items, divide shared dishes, then allocate tax and tip using an agreed method.

03

Handle rounding openly

Rounding each person's amount can leave a small difference. Assign the remainder to one person or round the total first and record who covered the extra cents.

SEE IT IN PRACTICE

Example: four equal diners

A $120 subtotal with a 20% pre-tax tip adds $24. If tax is $9.60, the $153.60 total divided by four is $38.40 each.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

What to check before you decide

  • Local customs and service-charge rules vary.
  • The equal-split calculator does not allocate different orders person by person.
